Baby Boy Gray Blue Nursery Design

What’s important in a baby boy nursery decor for you? What do you want to teach your baby through nursery decor he will be seeing around day in and day out?

In this post, I will share my vision for the nursery, how to decorate the nursery room so it grows with the baby, and how to set up the baby room to encourage the love for reading from an early age.

Baby boy nursery decor

As I was designing this nursery I had the following goals in mind: clean, but cozy, mix neutrals with some color, and not too “baby” theme, so that he would grow up in it and I wouldn’t need to change it in one year.

Nursery decor theme

Personally, I don’t like it when the nursery theme is taken too literally. I feel that when you can call a nursery “zoo-themed” or “sea-themed” or any other specific theme, you put yourself in a “design box” so to speak that is hard to break away.

I like to “give hints” about the theme I had in mind and to use decor to point to it.

When I was working on Michael’s nursery decor, I wanted to create a “world traveler” feel. I am happy that my boy will be growing up in the world that is open for exploration and travel and I wanted to encourage curiosity for learning and traveling from an early age.

One mistake parents often make, when decorating a nursery is they go strictly with “baby” decor. You can break away for nursery specific decor pieces, and choose ones that will grow with your baby, for a timeless feel.

Encourage a love for reading through design

To encourage a love for reading in your little one, create a comfortable reading space for both the baby and the parent.

An open shelving allows kids to see the books and choose the one they want. Be sure to rotake books often.

Add comfortable seating, to provide a place for a parent to cuddle up with their baby and read them a book before bedtime.

Reading to kids regularly will create a habit that will last them a lifetime. My 3-year-old son Michael loves it when I read to him. A promise of a book before nap or bedtime helps the preparation for bedtime to go much smoother.

Nursery must have shopping list

As you are brainstorming nursery design, think of the key pieces to include. Here is my shopping list:

  • Crib
  • Mattress
  • Dresser
  • Changing pad
  • Rocker/chair
  • Shelf for books/decor
  • Curtains/window treatment (for decor and light management)
  • Storage for toys
  • Art/decor

Details…

I like how these small details bring everything together and add interest for small eyes.

Cute little pom-poms on the curtains have a gender-neutral feel due to the dark blue tone of the outside panels.

This little shelf and an art piece summarizes the “world traveler” them. A place to come home to, books, a globe and word of God, just what a world traveler will need.

The built-in closet provides plenty of storage that is reachable by a little man.

When designing a built-in closet for a kids’ room, consider installing clothes racks lower so it’s accessible by them. That will help to train them to be independent as they will be able to reach for or put away their clothes.

I hope you have found the inspiration you needed to begin working designing and decorating your baby’s nursery.
