In the world of home design, there are many different styles that have risen to popularity. Farmhouse style became popular thanks to Fixer Upper and Joanna Gaines’s love for it. Modern farmhouse design combines country charm and natural materials with sleek and modern lines for a beautiful look that’s perfect for any home!

If you are looking for design ideas – here are some photos of the modern farmhouse I’ve recently finished working on.

7 Tips to Turn Your Builder-Grade Home into a Custom Home

What is modern farmhouse style?

The modern farmhouse style combines a classic farmhouse aesthetic – its white walls, neutral color palette, natural elements, and weathered finishes with modern clean lines, marble tiles, dark accent colors, and modern light fixtures. The open-floor concept creates a welcoming space for the family to gather. You’ll find windows everywhere for natural light to pour in!

Is modern farmhouse going out of style?

No, not at all. It will always be timeless and elegant. If you’re looking for something new, try incorporating more rustic elements like exposed beams or wood floors.

The architectural details such as dark windows, doors, and a roof against light gray rock and walls create a classic timeless look.

The facade features large columns at the front porch entrance. The windows around the custom door make the entry feel grand and airy.

Board and batten siding is a classic farmhouse feature.  Boards were used to cover the walls and the battens (the narrow wood) were used to cover the seams. Here is used as an accent on the front wall, entry, and above the garage.

Modern Farmhouse kitchen

The classic farmhouse style presumes a white kitchen, but the modern take allows for more creativity.

We went for a perfect blend of dark gray (Sherwin Williams Grizzle Gray SW 7068) on the bottom and white on top match beautifully with the color scheme of the exterior.

Two-tone kitchen cabinets along the main kitchen wall are broken up by the open shelves.

Open shelves in the kitchen provide a place to showcase favorite decor pieces, as well as serve as storage for your dishes or cups.

The openness of the kitchen leads to a more spacious living room and dining area.

Butler’s pantry is positioned between the kitchen and the laundry/mudroom and provides additional storage space.

A mudroom with a bench serves as the second entrance to the home, making it easy for guests or children to do a quick change before entering the house.

This room houses laundry, a pet shower, and a mudroom. Talk about multitasking!

Dark colors are accent colors in this house. Horizontal shiplap painted black spices up this small powder room. It’s a great way to make a statement in a small space.

A large window in the family room takes full advantage of natural light, making this area a great place to gather.  While a trunk coffee table gives that rustic touch.

Modern farmhouse bathroom design

This black and white hexagon tile is classic, yet playful. The light fixtures from the Pottery Barn remind of honeycombs and give a fresh spin to the hexagon tile theme. This style is perfect for a teenager.

Guest bedroom and bathroom

The style of the guest bedroom combines the “modern” and the “farmhouse” so graciously.

Installing custom cabinets allowed us to reduce the cabinet depth by the toilet and to utilize the whole wall for storage space.

A small bathroom looks more spacious by using light tile and white cabinetry. White subway tile – a classing farmhouse vibe is replaced by marble tile, but it’s still within the neutral color scheme.

Note, how the same tile is used in the shower stall as well as the mirror wall. Using different types of tiles would be too busy for such a small space.

Conclusion:

This is such a beautiful home, with so much character. It’s reminiscent of the old farmhouse with soul in rural areas but it still has all of the modern amenities that people want today.

I hope you have enjoyed a tour of this custom modern farmhouse home.
