A round table is usually the right answer in a room like this one. There is no head of the table, no corner to walk around on the way to the window, and everyone stays inside conversation distance of everyone else. The diameter is the decision that matters: large enough to seat the family, small enough that a chair can push all the way back without meeting the window casing behind it. The chairs are fully upholstered and slipcovered rather than wood-seated, which is what makes people stay at the table after the plates are cleared, and what makes the room survive being used.

The palette works within a narrow band of warm off-whites—wall, drapery, chair linen, the low-relief plaster panel above the table—separated by texture instead of by color. That is a deliberate restraint. The plaster art is tonal, so it fills the wall without asking to be looked at. The drapery runs to the floor in nearly the same value as the paint, which makes the window read taller and keeps the corner from going gray on an overcast winter afternoon. The wood is the one place with any pattern, and it is the surface everyone is already looking at.

The chandelier is scaled to the table rather than to the room, hung high enough to see a face across it, and fitted with ribbed glass so the bulbs read as warmth rather than as points of glare at eye level. Then there is the arrangement: greenery and pomegranates in a fluted footed bowl, the single saturated note in the frame. This is what a quiet base is for. One seasonal arrangement changes the whole room, and it changes back just as easily.

The tabletop is laid in wedges of oak radiating from the center, so the grain repeats the round shape instead of arguing with it.
