The Magic of Coming Home for Christmas

A Christmas mantel built from one long run of fresh greenery and a cluster of brass ornaments, weighted deliberately to one side.

The garland is one continuous run rather than a series of pieces, and it falls long on one end and short on the other. Symmetry on a mantel looks careful; a deliberate asymmetry looks designed. Balance comes back through height instead — lit tapers stepped up on the short end, holding the eye at roughly the level the long drop reaches on the other side.

The ornaments are one metal in three sizes, clustered where the greenery falls instead of spaced evenly along the shelf. Fresh greenery is heavy and it wants to slide, so the run has to be weighted and fixed to hold that shape for the length of the season — that fixing is most of the work and none of the photograph. The rest of the room is left alone. The built-ins keep their year-round objects and pick up a bowl of moss, and a single small ceramic house sits on the ottoman. The house stays the house.

Seasonal work is scheduled like any other installation. Everything is sourced and fitted in one visit, and in January it comes down and is packed for storage, which is the part most people would rather not give a weekend to. Only a limited number of homes are taken each season, so dates fill in order of booking.

The garland crosses in front of the mirror frame rather than stopping at it, which is why the mantel reads as one piece from the sofa.
